Rashmi Shivni

MS Student

Rashmi graduated summa cum laude from Columbia College Chicago with a BS in science communication and journalism in 2015. She dedicated seven years to working full-time as a science journalist and writer before transitioning into her current role as a graduate student, occasionally freelancing as a writer.

Rashmi's current research delves into the intricate process of determining the biosynthesis of a novel chlorophyll found in the marine cyanobacterium Acaryochloris spp. Her profound interest in this technical research stems directly from her prior experiences reporting on scientists in both laboratory and field settings within the realm of astrobiology. It was this fascination with astrobiology that led her to join the Swingley Lab, where she actively participates in the collective mission to discover signs of life beyond our planet.

Outside of the lab, She take pride in raising her kitty Mona and  growing indoor garden. She loves to play video games and watch all kinds of movies and shows. Her favourite genre are science fiction, fantasy, or thrillers. Don't hesitate to engage her in conversation about her scientific interests and hobbies, as she's always eager to share her enthusiasm, and in her own words, "I'll talk your ear off about it all!"
