Plant-Soil Interactions

Systematic constraints on plant and soil communities

Project Description

In coordination with Nicholas Barber at NIU and Andrew Hipp and others at the Morton Arboretum, we are describing soil responses in 410 plantings designed to systematically characterize impacts of plant phylogenetic and functional diversity on prairie ecosystems. These plots include combinations and monocultures of plant species aimed at deconvoluting plant-plant and plant-soil interactions in restored prairies with the goal of informing more successful restoration efforts. This work is a natural extension of and complement to the continuing prairie restoration analyses at the Nachusa Grasslands, and both projects are expected to inform one another.
